Classroom Parties
Classroom parties, I love them, while at the same time hating them. I love that we can celebrate seasons, but hate the preparation that comes as we try to get ready for the party. I never know what is appropriate, I never know, should I ask the parents to bring something, I don't want them to feel obligated to send something. Do I buy all the supplies myself, this I also dislike as I then spend money I hadn't planned to spend, so my class can say that they got to participate like all the other classes do. I wish we could do a party that was a reward based something, like a game day, without the sugary snacks. Am I over thinking this or being a scrooge? I wish there was a good balance for school parties. Time for fun and games without to many snack and chaos in my room. Happy Holidays.

I agree with you about parties.:) I like how you are speaking to the teacher and that you are giving teachers a place to comment on things that are very common in our world. Very creative.
ReplyDeleteWe don't have a lot of celebrations at the middle school level, but I dislike having our (my) routine disrupted. I know some of my students feel the same way. I think our office referrals are much higher on these days.
ReplyDeleteI would agree that student need to stay in their routine. Party days seem to get them wired and they have a hard time staying on task. Those kids that are already having a hard time on a daily basis, seem to spiral out of control on days that we have parties and routine is interrupted.
ReplyDeleteI am not a k-12 instructor and thus I am responding from the perspective of a parent/grandparent. I think parties are a great way of including family members. I can remember when my parents drove 4 hours to attend a grand parent's day event for one of my children. I also remember that they allowed for "adopted grandparents" so when they couldn't attend for one of our other children, the child could still have a guest, so they did not feel left out.
